Little improvement reported in COVID-19, influenza, RSV cases in Ottawa

Levels of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continue to be concerning in the capital this week.

Levels of COVID-19, influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) continue to be concerning in the national capital this week.

Ottawa Public Health reported Wednesday there were 216 new cases of COVID-19 in the seven days ending Jan. 16. There were 135 confirmed COVID-19 patients in hospital, with two of them in intensive care units. Fifty-two of those people were admitted to hospital because of COVID, while the other 83 were admitted for other reasons.

The agency reported five more people had died of the infection.

Meanwhile, there were 13 new outbreaks in institutional settings, bringing the total number of current institutional outbreaks to 25.

Case levels of influenza results showed some improvement, OPH reported, though 14 patients were hospitalized during the second week of this year. There were 11 new patients hospitalized with RSV during the same period.

The latest COVID-19 statistics bring the total number of people who have been infected with the virus in the capital region to 97,394 since the pandemic began in 2020, while 1,208 people have died.
