Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid understands why his team isn’t favored against the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s Super Bowl matchup, but he told reporters Thursday that he never goes into any contest with an underdog mentality anyway.

“I understand why we’re the underdog — I get that — we had some ups and downs during the season,” Reid said, per Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

“I never feel like an underdog going into a game, but I understand why it’s been situated that way. It is what it is.”

The Chiefs aren’t much of an underdog. Per DraftKings Sportsbook, the 49ers are only favored by two points.

It wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs win, especially given an impressive playoff run that included road wins over the AFC’s top two seeds in the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills. It also helps to have a generational talent running the offense in quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

And in regards to Reid’s mindset, former NFL executive Michael Lombardi offered a proper perspective on his mentality.

Reid certainly isn’t being cocky by any standards. He just knows it’s important to go into a game with a winning mindset and confidence.

We’ll soon find out if the Chiefs can pull this one off. Kansas City and San Francisco will kick off Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET from Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.
