3 Big Changes Eagles Must Make in 2024 Offseason After NFL Playoff Loss

The Philadelphia Eagles are in need of an offseason overhaul.

The Eagles crashed out of wild-card weekend with a disastrous 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that exposed all of the issues the team dealt with in the closing stretch of the regular season.

Head coach Nick Sirianni’s job is under pressure, as is the status of both coordinators.

If Sirianni is retained, the Eagles will likely enter 2024 with two new coordinators after how badly things ended this season.

The Eagles must also revamp their roster to get younger. The older defensive players were not good enough during the losing stretch, and that means general manager Howie Roseman needs to work his transactional magic yet again in order to keep the Eagles as a Super Bowl contender moving forward.

Offensive coordinator Brian Johnson and defensive play callers Sean Desai and Matt Patricia should all not feel safe about coming back in 2024.

The defensive struggles forced a switch in play caller from Desai to Patricia late in the regular season, but that did nothing to help the Eagles.

Johnson’s offensive strategy got worse as the season went on, as the Eagles failed to keep their offense fresh around Jalen Hurts.

The Eagles offense looked lost on Monday night without A.J. Brown, and if it was not for a few big plays from DeVonta Smith, they would not have put up any points.

Sirianni took a risk by adding two younger coordinators to his staff after Shane Steichen and Jonathan Gannon departed for head coaching gigs in Indianapolis and Arizona, but those moves did not work.

The Eagles need to bring in more veteran coordinators who can adapt on the fly and not allow their team to go through weeks-long struggles.

The Eagles defensive backs let the franchise down on Monday night.

Darius Slay and James Bradberry struggled with the basics of cornerback play and that led to countless big plays for Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Slay and Bradberry were vital parts of the Super Bowl run last season, but both players appeared to run out of gas as the 2023 season went on.

Roseman has done a good job at backfilling other positions so that younger players are ready to take over when veterans struggle, but that has not been the case yet at defensive back.

Eli Ricks, Josh Jobe and Kelee Ringo could be the answer next season to get younger at cornerback, but it may be hard to rely on all three young players to get the job done.

Roseman may have to bring in another big-name defensive back, like he has with trades for Slay and Kevin Byard, to bridge the gap to Ricks, Jobe and Ringo, or he could use the team’s first-round pick on one of the top corners.

Regardless of what mechanism is used, the Eagles must shake up their secondary to avoid the embarrassing performances from the end of the 2023 campaign.

The Eagles have a terrific trio in A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith and Dallas Goedert.

However, the team looked lost when one of those players were out injured this season.

Goedert’s absence for a forearm injury left a wide-open hole in the middle of the field that the Eagles could not fill with anyone on their roster.

Brown’s absence on Monday was supposed to be filled by Julio Jones, but unfortunately, he suffered a concussion late in the first half.

Jones’ presence may not have mattered because the Eagles were scrambled from a schematic standpoint, but he at least matched the physical qualities of Brown.

The Eagles must build more depth behind Brown, Smith and Goedert to avoid such a significant drop off if they get hurt in 2024, or if they run into matchups that negate their skill sets.

That could mean the addition of new stars through the draft because money has to be allocated to a new contract for Smith and to rebuilding parts of the defense.
